A devastating head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a Toyota LDV has claimed the lives of two men and left 19 others injured on the N2 road between Mthatha and Qumbu on Thursday evening.
The horrific crash occurred when the two vehicles, travelling in opposite directions, collided with force, leaving a trail of destruction along the busy route. According to initial reports, the minibus taxi was transporting 15 occupants from Qumbu, while the Toyota LDV, carrying an alleged three occupants, was travelling from the Mthatha direction.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, where both vehicles were found extensively damaged. Two male occupants were declared dead on arrival, while the remaining 19 survivors sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical. The injured were stabilised at the scene before being rushed to various hospitals in Mthatha for urgent medical treatment.
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of the collision, but early indications suggest reckless and negligent driving may have played a role.
Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC, Xolile Nqatha, has issued a stern warning to motorists, urging them to strictly adhere to road regulations and remain vigilant at all times.
“This tragic incident is a painful reminder of the dangers on our roads. We urge all drivers to exercise extreme caution and responsibility,” said Nqatha.
He also extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
Police have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide, linked to reckless and negligent driving, will be opened at Libode SAPS as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
