12 Police officers arrested over R360m health tender linked to ‘Cat’ Matlala

Twelve police officers have been arrested in Ekurhuleni as part of a widening corruption probe into the awarding of a controversial R360-million police health services contract.

The arrests were carried out by the National Prosecuting Authority’s Independent Directorate Against Corruption, following a series of coordinated raids across Gauteng.

The officers are accused of playing a role in the awarding of the lucrative tender to Medicare 24 Tshwane District, a company linked to alleged crime kingpin Vusimusi Matlala.

The contract, awarded in 2024, has come under intense scrutiny amid allegations of irregularities and corruption. It has also featured prominently in proceedings before the Madlanga Commission, as well as a parliamentary inquiry examining the infiltration of organised crime into South Africa’s criminal justice system.

Authorities confirmed that the contract was later cancelled by the National Police Commissioner after internal audits flagged it as irregular.

The arrests mark a significant development in what officials describe as a broader investigation into criminal networks operating within state institutions, particularly within law enforcement structures.

All 12 accused are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate Court in the coming days.

The NPA said the investigation remains ongoing, with the possibility of further arrests as authorities continue to unravel the full extent of the alleged corruption network.
