24-year-old man in custody for assaulting 31-year-old girlfriend
Police in KwaZulu- Natal have confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old man following a brutal domestic violence
The 31-year-old girlfriend opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at the Umlazi police station.
According to police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda “It is reported that the suspect called the victim to his place to collect her belongings. Upon arrival, the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim with a pipe and bit her with his teeth, whilst also assaulting her with his hands. The victim reportedly ran back to her vehicle, and the suspect followed her and damaged the rear windscreen of the vehicle.”
The victim in a video that has since gone viral, accused the police of failing to apprehend the suspect after she opened several domestic violence cases.
“It is worth noting that the two partners have a history of opening cases against each other. Those cases have been ventilated in court and were not necessarily of domestic violence in nature,” said Netshiunda.
The victim is currently fighting for her life in hospital for burn injuries after setting her boyfriend’s car alight. She is expected to appear in court for charges of assault and malicious damage to property.
