The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued a recall for hundreds of Ford Transit and Tourneo Custom vehicles due to a battery defect that could pose potential health risks to occupants.
The recall affects 582 vehicles from the 2022 to 2026 model range, which were sold across South Africa between 2021 and 2025. The action follows a notification from Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.
According to the NCC, the affected vehicles may have a fault in the H7 AGM battery, which could emit an acidic smell similar to rotten eggs, produce a hissing sound, or release visible gas inside the cabin. In some cases, occupants may also experience unusual warmth in the seat area.
The commission warned that under increased temperatures, the battery may produce hydrogen sulphide gas, which can pose health risks if inhaled over prolonged periods.
Owners of affected vehicles have been urged to take their vehicles to the nearest authorised dealership for inspection and repairs, which will be carried out at no cost.
