Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has expressed shock and sadness following the death of a Grade 3 learner after a wall collapsed at Lerutle Primary School.
The young boy died in hospital after a section of a wall reportedly fell on six learners during breaktime on Thursday. Five other learners remain hospitalised with serious injuries.
Preliminary reports indicate that the wall collapsed during break, trapping the pupils underneath and leaving them critically injured. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
The Gauteng Department of Education has deployed psycho-social support teams to the school to provide counselling and emotional support to affected learners, educators, and the bereaved family.
