ANC Alfred Nzo region proposes re-election of Councillor candidates

ANC Alfred Nzo region has asked members of the branches who have appealed due to unsatisfactory of chosen candidates for councillor positions in the upcoming elections to go back to their different branches and resolve their issues. The organization held a four-day meeting where they were resolving issues from branches who held Branch General Meetings to elect councillors in waiting in preparation for the upcoming local government elections.

ANC Alfred Nzo region Chairperson Sixolile Mehlomakhulu said where there were discrepancies they should be corrected so members should go back and holding meetings “We have said our members should go back and elect a member whom they will go and present to the community to approve and they should do this before the election. Where proper procedures were not followed, members should go back and re-run the elections. The process of checking appeals was held throughout the province. That process will still have to continue in these different branches” said Mehlomakhulu.

The wards that appealed in the region include wards 1, 6, 12 and ward 22. Mehlomakhulu said they dealt with different cases and they all had different merits and the leadership has advised all branches to go back and relook at their different issues. “We have asked branches to go back and ensure that all those elected, young and old, should ensure that are involved in community development and are success-driven in terms of ensuring service delivery…
“We do have training for our councillors as ANC as any political party would. Our members should love working for and with the community” said Mehlomakhulu. Meanwhile, the suggestion by former deputy Chief justice Dikgang Moseneke earlier this week suggested that the elections be postponed to early next year might put the constitutional court in an unusual position as such a decision would require the amendment of the constitution.”

According to section 159(2) of the constitution, local municipal and metro councils will cease their legal authority to function. This means services like collecting rubbish and other services will not be rendered and municipal officials will not be paid. The amendment of the constitution would require 75% of members of the National Assembly as holding free and fair elections regularly is one of the founding values of the constitutions of South Africa’s democracy.
