At least R5 billion needed to rebuild flooded Limpopo
According to the local authorities at least R5 billion is needed to rebuild the infrastructure and roads destroyed by the heavy rains in Limpopo.
It is reported that more than 1 500 houses have been destroyed and 439 roads spanning more than 600km require urgent intervention. National and provincial that have severely been damaged include R527 in the Hoedspruit area; R40 near Maseke Game Reserve and R71 between Gravelotte and Phalaborwa
Limpopo premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba said assessments were ongoing but early projections indicate that over R4 billion would be required the rebuild the province.
“Over R4bn is required to cover work across infrastructure. However, I must emphasise that these figures remain provisional because there are areas we have not yet been able to assess even using helicopters due to ongoing weather challenges,” she said.
Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Velenkosini Hlabisa reaffirmed government’s commitment to restoring normality and rebuilding affected areas, with a focus on resilient infrastructure.
The Minister conveyed his deepest condolences to families and communities affected by the loss of life.
“The Minister conveyed his deepest condolences to families and communities affected by the loss of life and urged residents to remain vigilant, heed warnings, avoid unnecessary travel and prioritise safety. Response and recovery efforts will continue to be coordinated to ensure that assistance reaches all affected communities,” said CoGTA spokesperson Legadima Leso.
