Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe to apply for bail in Alexandra court

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the son of late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, is expected to apply for bail at the Alexandra Magistrates Court following his recent arrest on serious charges.

Chatunga faces charges of attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice stemming from a shooting incident at his family’s property in Hyde Park. The incident reportedly involved a 23-year-old gardener who was shot and injured on 19 February after an altercation, the details of which remain unclear.

According to the South African Police Service, investigators recovered spent bullet cartridges from the scene but have yet to locate the firearm allegedly used in the shooting. The missing weapon led to additional charges being added after the initial arrest.

Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhuwi confirmed that the firearm has not been found and that investigations are ongoing. She stated that while crucial evidence was secured at the property, efforts to trace the weapon continue.

Both Chatunga and his co-accused were initially charged with attempted murder following their arrest. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the events leading up to the shooting.

The alleged victim remains hospitalised as investigations proceed.
