The legal proceedings against Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of the late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, and his co-accused Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze took a significant turn this week. The pair reportedly abandoned their bail application in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.
After a brief appearance in court, the matter has now been transferred to the regional court for plea negotiations, indicating a shift in how the case will be handled moving forward.
Mugabe, 29, and Matonhodze, 33, face multiple serious charges following a shooting incident at a property in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, in February 2026, during which a 23-year-old employee was seriously injured. The pair are accused of attempted murder, possession of a firearm and ammunition, pointing a firearm, defeating the ends of justice, theft, and possibly contravening the Immigration Act.
The next court date, 17 March 2026, will determine the next steps in the prosecution and any further legal strategy by the defence.
