KuGompo, Eastern Cape — Police in the Eastern Cape have launched an investigation after the body of a three-year-old boy, who had been reported missing earlier this month, was discovered in a dam near his home.
The South African Police Service said the child was allegedly taken from his home in Ebhongweni Location, KuGompo on 2 March at about 17:00. His mother reported him missing the following afternoon, prompting an extensive search by police.
During the investigation, authorities received information pointing to a possible suspect, leading to the opening of a kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice case.
Search efforts intensified on 10 March, involving members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, the K9 Unit, and the Eastern Cape Human Rights and Missing Persons Unit. The boy’s body was later found in a dam about one kilometre from his home.
The body has been taken to a state mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Police say a murder charge may be added, or an inquest docket opened, depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Authorities have withheld the identities of the child and the suspected individual to protect the integrity of the investigation and the family’s privacy.
