A Mayor from the Eastern Cape was apprehended on Sunday afternoon, accused of fraud. Last week, social media began circulating news of an Eastern Cape Mayor who is being saught by the police. According to reports, the Mayor turned himself in to Matatiele authorities this afternoon. He was processed, and released on warning, with a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday. Although we do not have details about the fraud charges but we can confirm that on June 2023 DA councilor Wonga Poteana and member of National Parliament, Baxolule Nodada opened a case of fraud against Cllr Sonwabile Mngenela who is the Mayor of Matatiele.
Potwana and Nodada claimed to the police that Cllr Mngenela utilized public funds amounting to R13000.00 to pay for a trip to attend the ANC Conference. The story made headlines in the South African media with ANC province called to account. Authorities did not want to confirm if the charges are related to this matter till the Mayor appears before court.
