Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has called for unity following a peaceful march that turned chaotic earlier today.
The municipality expressed concern over inflammatory remarks by some foreign nationals, saying such statements threaten social cohesion and undermine South Africa’s sovereignty and democratic order.
While reaffirming that the city is not against foreign nationals, it emphasised that law-abiding residents are welcome, but any actions that incite division or disrespect institutions will not be tolerated.
The municipality also raised concern over a reported “coronation” of a foreign king in East London, describing it as disrespectful to the AmaRharhabe Kingdom and traditional leadership, including King Vululwandle Sandile.
Government has pledged to engage diplomatically through DIRCO and other stakeholders, while also consulting traditional leaders.
Authorities condemned the violence that erupted during the march and urged residents to remain calm and act within the law. Emergency services and police remain on the scene.
Buffalo City reiterated its commitment to peace, unity, and the rule of law, while affirming support for traditional leadership and community stability.
