Courtroom drama in Cape Town as seven accused in a major extortion, money laundering, and racketeering case linked to long-distance bus operators fight to have charges dropped. They argue the case doesn’t belong in Cape Town and want it moved to courts where the alleged crimes took place — while also challenging the legitimacy of the centralisation certificate.
Proceedings were briefly halted over a conflict of interest after it emerged that one defence lawyer was married to the presiding magistrate, forcing her to recuse herself. A new magistrate has since taken over.
The State is pushing for time to respond, with arguments and a possible ruling expected tomorrow morning.
Meanwhile, accused number one, Bonke Makalala, did not appear in court after abandoning his bid for bail.
