Capitec, FNB to Offer Smart ID and Passport Services in More Branches and Banking Apps
Capitec Bank and First National Bank (FNB) have joined the Department of Home Affairs’ new digital partnership, which will see Smart ID and passport services expand from just 30 branches to hundreds across South Africa.
Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber says the partnership will also make these services available on secure digital banking apps, reducing the need for long queues and travel to Home Affairs offices.
The initiative forms part of the government’s goal to offer Smart ID and passport services at 1 000 bank branches by 2029. The department has invited all major banks, including ABSA, Nedbank, Standard Bank, and Discovery Bank, to join the programme.
Minister Schreiber will visit Capitec Head Office in Stellenbosch on Tuesday and FNB’s Portside Tower in Cape Town on Wednesday to outline the benefits for South Africans.
The department says the reform will modernise service delivery and phase out the outdated Green ID book, which is vulnerable to fraud.
