Chairperson of the Alfred Nzo District Command Council Sixolile Mehlomakhulu has today launched the District wide Covid 19 roll out programme at O.R. and Adelaide Tambo Hospital in Mbizana. Petela said the launch follows government’s resumption of the Johnson and Johnson Vaccine roll out aimed at fighting Covid 19. He said 2400 jabs have to be administered in the region by May 17.
Speaking During the launch Mehlomakhulu voiced excitement about the launch saying people of the region have been longing for the vaccine “It has been a concern for us as a district where we had our health workers bussed to Nelson Mandela Hospital in Umthatha before they can be vaccinated. That was a very big risk but we are happy now that our people are going to get their jab in the region,” said Mehlomakhulu.
Professional nurse Sindisiwe Ndlela became the first health worker to be vaccinated this morning. In an interview Ndlela said she is very excited and had to take the lead in taking the vaccine to show other colleagues that there is no danger “I would like to invite all health workers and people of Alfred Nzo at large to take the vaccine as it is the only prevention measure against this pandemic.”
Petela said about six hundred health workers have so far been vaccinated at Nelson Mandela Academic hospital since the beginning of the first phas. The 2400 is going to sum up the number of health workers to be vaccinated in the region.
Commenting about the response, Petela said health workers are now showing more interest as a result the registration system is slow due to the demand . “802 gadgets have also been handed over to home based health workers to assist in the registration of those 60 years and older people in preparation for phase 2 of the vaccination which will end in October”, said Petela.
