EC grade 12 learner’s remains discovered in nearby village
The Eastern Cape Department of Education has learnt with shock the passing away of a Grade 12 learner of Nondwe High School in Amatole East District.
The learner’s remains were discovered on Wednesday by another learner who went to relieve himself in the toilets. It is alleged that the learner together with her sister sneaked out the study camp on Saturday night. The deceased went missing until her dead body was discovered in the morning on Wednesday, 1st December 2021 in the nearby toilets in the village, 100m away from the school.
A team led by the District Director with the Education Social Support Services (ESSS) officials went to the school to provide psychosocial support services which include counselling for the learners and staff on camp.
The MEC and the entire education fraternity mourns this tragedy and sends its sincere condolences to the bereaved family, the classmates and all the learners including the entire school staff. The family of the deceased has
already been contacted by the Department to give support during this difficult time and will visit the home on Friday, 03 December 2021. The Department would like to urge the community of Nondwe high school to work with the law enforcement agencies during their investigation to find closure on the matter.
The department has arranged counselling for all the school learners, educators including the family to debrief them from the traumatic experience.
