Matatiele Municipality Selected for Eastern Cape’s Pilot Profiling Initiative to Boost Economic Growth

Matatiele Municipality has been chosen as one of three municipalities in the Eastern Cape to participate in a pilot profiling initiative led by ECSECC and ECDC. The initiative aims to identify key catalytic projects that could drive significant development within the municipality, said Municipal Manager Lizo Matiwane in a statement. Matiwane said  among the various projects identified, a standout is an agro-processing project in the agriculture sector, which the municipality plans to develop by transforming underutilized silos into a functional agro-processing hub.

“To kickstart the project, R3 million has been allocated for essential tasks such as architectural and engineering designs, structural planning, stormwater management, 3D renderings, and overall cost assessments for the precinct. The remaining portion of the budget will be used to complete the storage facility and construct a boundary wall between January and June of the next year”

According to Matiwane these initiatives are part of the Eastern Cape investment strategy and will be presented at various investment forums to attract potential investors.  He said On the 3rd of December, our Mayor, Municipal Manager, and General Manager for Local Economic Development attended a handover ceremony in East London, where the MEC for Finance and Premier pledged their support for local municipalities. The event underscored Matatiele’s potential as a gateway to Lesotho, further elevating the Eastern Cape as a key player in regional investment opportunities.

“These efforts are part of our ongoing commitment to improving the municipality’s economic landscape and addressing the triple challenges of unemployment, poverty, and inequality. We thank our community for their continued support and dedication to these important initiatives.”, concluded Matiwane.
