POVERTY FORCES EASTERN CAPE MOTHER TO BURRY HER TWO SONS LIKE SHE IS BURYING DOGS

A Lusikisiki woman in the province of the Eastern Cape has been forced to bury her two sons in an unusual way last Sunday because she did not have money to provide a dignified funeral for them. Their burnt bodies were wrapped in blankets, thrown into the grave, with no church service or food. Mother, Nomsa Nozandisa 58 told the Informer that poverty has forced her to bury her sons in this paupers way at Qebedu location in Lusikisiki.

Zonke and Babini  Ncume aged between 23 and 27 were allegedly killed by the community a week ago. According to reports the two were beaten and burnt to no recognition.  A community member who did not want to be named said the two boys were terrorising the community. “These boys were killing people and they were also conducting armed robberies and beating people ”, he said.  This was denied by the mother. “I was never invited to a traditional council because of wrong doings by my sons. Even one of their brothers was shocked to hear that his brothers were killed because of terrorising the community. “That is news to me”.

“First of all my brothers have not been staying here, what I know is that Zonke was a taxi driver Flagstaff and Babini was a builder also at Flagstaff. We never went to court to talk about their wrong doings”, said the brother.

The last time the two brothers spoke to their mother was last week when they told her that they want to visit their grandmother’s grave at KwaZulu a village not far from Qebedu. “On the day of the incident I was called by my brother telling me that something bad has happened to my sons. When we went to the scene I was not allowed to see what had happened. I was told to go back home”, she said.

Nozandisa said she was told the following day that her sons were killed. “I was so devastated. What makes matters worse now is that I am alone, I don’t have anybody during this ordeal. I am not working I get temporal jobs like washing peoples clothes and working in gardens”, she said. I did nota have money to insure my sons or join burial society for them.

Nozandise had to go to fetch the two bodies of her sons from the hospital mortuary alone. The two bodies were buried in a big grave dug specially for them. Nozandise was the only woman amongst those few men next to the grave. “I am feeling better that they are buried. It would be worse if I was unable to know where their bones were. Now I know where their bones are even if they are buried like dogs”, she concluded.
