It seems that the arrival of Covid-19 vaccine isn’t going to prevent the loss of deaths we have already witnessed as minister of health Dr Zweli Mkhize says South Africa and other African countries should prepare for the impact of possible third wave Covid-19infections. Mkhize said this during a media briefing on Thursday. According to the minister, the third wave could be more severe than the two previous waves. Mkhize said developed countries with more resources have a better chance of being able to respond than most on the African continent.
Minister further that said only about seven countries in Africa can afford the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines for their citizens and that the rest have to rely on support through the COVAX vaccine initiative. On Monday during the nation address said that the country will achieve herd immunity once 67% of the population has been vaccinated. Ramaphosa also said that no one will be forced to take the vaccine or be banned from travelling anywhere or taking part in any activity if they have not been vaccinated. More than 45 000 have succumbed to Covid-19 in the country.
