A Municipal Vehicle allocated to the Mayor of Umzimvubu Local Municipality is reported to be beyond repairs after it capsized and rolled a number of times yesterday evening near Qumbu under Mhlontlo Local Municipality. According to reports the car was driven by the Mayor of the Municipality, Councillor Sobane Mnukwa during the incident. The Mayor was not injured and is reported to be at his home. It is not known whether he was alone in the car or not but both air bags popped out. Municipal Spokesperson Khanya Khalashe confirmed the reports but said the municipality is conducting its own investigation. “A full statement will be released this afternoon or early in the morning tomorrow”, he said. The Informer talked to three councillors who confirmed that Cllr Mnukwa was driving the car. Reports said a Mercedes Benz ML250 was parked at the Municipal Offices in Mount Ayliff on Thursday by the Mayor s driver on Monday when Cllr Mnukwa came and demanded it. They also said that the Municipality did not have a programme yesterday within its jurisdiction,or rather a programme that require the Mayor to travel out of Umzimvubu. If Cllr Mnukwa was driving the car he might be in breach of Municipal policy which prohibits Mayors and speakers to drive themselves. He might also be found to be in breach of the lockdown regulations that demand all communities to be in their homes. Commenting about the matter D.A. Chairperson in Alfred Nzo region Wonga Potwana described this incident as behaviour of an ill disciplined member of the African National Congress. He said these people regard themselves as above the law. He asked where Cllr Mnukwa was going during holiday and lockdown. Was the trip allowed? It is now time for those who vote for the ANC to see how arrogant these people are when in positions of power,” he concluded.
