COPE founder Mosiuoa Lekota dies at 77

The Congress of the People (COPE) has confirmed the passing of its founding leader, Mosiuoa Lekota, at the age of 77. Lekota, who hailed from Thaba Nchu in the Free State, had been battling health challenges for some time and stepped back from active politics last year to focus on his wellbeing.

Following his decision to step down, Teboho Loate was appointed as the interim leader of COPE, the party Lekota co-founded in 2008 after leaving the African National Congress (ANC).

Lekota was a prominent figure in South African politics. He served as the first Premier of the Free State from 1994 to 1996 and later as Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2008. His political career spanned decades, marked by his contributions to both the ANC and COPE.

His family confirmed his death. In a statement, COPE expressed their condolences:
“On behalf of the leadership, membership, and supporters of COPE, we extend our deepest condolences to the Lekota family and all South Africans who mourn this loss.”

Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be released in the coming days.
