The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has announced plans to stage a protest at the offices of the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEM), opposing a 9.5% contribution increase and raising broader labour concerns.
The federation says the hike places an unfair financial burden on government employees already struggling with rising living costs. COSATU argues that the increase was implemented without adequate consultation and transparency.
Union leaders say the demonstration aims to demand the reversal of the 9.5% hike and greater accountability in the management of the medical scheme. A memorandum of demands is expected to be handed over during the protest.
COSATU has called on its members to support the action, warning that workers cannot continue to absorb escalating costs without meaningful engagement.
GEM has yet to issue a formal response to the planned strike.
