ANC Municipal Speaker faces reinstated attempted murder charges

In a recent development, Umzimvubu Local Municipality’s Speaker, Nkosinathi Nomnganga, has found himself at the center of controversy following the revival of an attempted murder case against him. The provincial Secretary of the ANC, Lulama Ngcukayithobi, raised concerns about Nomnganga’s legal troubles, prompting the Speaker to await a decision from the African National Congress regarding his future.

Nomnganga acknowledged receipt of a letter from Ngcukayithobi, detailing allegations of misconduct, including charges related to murder and attempted murder. Speaking to The Informer, Nomnganga clarified that he was aware only of the attempted murder case, for which he is scheduled to appear in court on July 2nd. He expressed surprise at the mention of a murder case, asserting his lack of knowledge about such allegations.

The attempted murder case dates back to 2018, involving an incident where Nomnganga allegedly opened fire on a group of schoolboys in Mt Frere, injuring one Lungelo Gelewe in the leg. The case had been provisionally withdrawn in 2022 due to insufficient evidence, a decision both Nomnganga and the victim’s mother, Mahlathi Gelewe, claim to have influenced through their efforts.

Gelewe has been vocal about her concerns, questioning the ANC’s decision to appoint someone with a criminal record. In response, Nomnganga defended his actions, stating that he sought to clear his name by pursuing information on the withdrawn case.

The unfolding situation places Nomnganga’s political future in uncertainty pending the ANC’s decision, as the party navigates the complexities surrounding the Speaker’s legal challenges.
