Defense lawyer withdraws from murder case, leaving accused Noxolo in limbo
A murder case involving Matsediso Lechamochamo and her daughter Noxolo Phindela took an unexpected turn on Wednesday as their defense lawyer, Ntanadazo Jaca of Jaca Attorneys, abruptly withdrew from the case. The proceedings came to a halt when Jaca informed the prosecutor of his decision without providing any reasons for his withdrawal.
Prosecutor Luvuyo Phomolo informed the court that the second accused, Noxolo Phindela, was now without legal representation as Mr. Jaca had chosen to step down. When asked by Magistrate Nombuso Nqwenani whether she would seek a state attorney or find a new defense lawyer, Noxolo opted for a state attorney.
As a result of these developments, the case was adjourned until April 8th to allow time for the state attorney to consult and for Noxolo to secure legal representation.
This development follows a previous appearance where Noxolo surprised the court by appearing with her own advocate, leaving her mother without legal representation. The court adjourned briefly to allow Noxolo and Matsediso to discuss the matter privately.
Matsediso Lechamochamo, Noxolo Phindela, along with Thapelo Sehlwayi, Zola Siphambo, and Lwazi Xaki, are facing charges of murder and kidnapping stemming from the assault and killing of Simbongile Sehlwayi, a drug seller for Lechamochamo and Phindela, in December 2021.
