Father in court for helping daughter’s lover escape prison

Father to appear in court for aiding and abetting Bester from prison

Matatiele| A 65-year-old man believed to be Dr. Nandipha Magudumana’s father, and a 39-year-old former G4S employee are set to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, in connection with Thabo Bester’s escape from the Mangaung correctional facility.

According to the national spokesperson, Colonel Athlenda Mathe, the pair was arrested over the weekend and have been charged with aiding and abetting Bester to escape from lawful custody

“The former G4S employee was arrested at his residence in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 08 April 2023, while the 65-year-old man was arrested on Friday, 07 April 2023 at his home in Port Edward,” Mathe said.

Bester and his lover were apprehended by Tanzanian authorities on Friday.

“Meanwhile, the delegation led by the SAPS’ Deputy National Commissioner responsible for policing, Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili has arrived in Arusha, Tanzania. The team is currently engaged with their Tanzanian counterparts to finalise all legal processes required towards bringing escapee Thabo Bester and his accomplices to justice in SA,” said Mathe.

The national commissioner of the SAPS, Gen Fannie Masemola has welcomed the latest arrests and confirmed that the possibility of more arrests could not be ruled out.

Police are also investigating a case of murder DNA proved that the body found in Bester’s cell at Mangaung Correctional Centre was not his and that the person whose charred remains were found in his cell last year had died of blunt force trauma.
