Five arrested in Umthatha taxi protest amid escalating tensions

This morning in Umthatha, five suspects were apprehended as tensions flared during a taxi protest. Colonel Priscilla Naidu reported that shots were fired at Public Order Police and Umthatha Vispol members. “Two suspects sustained injuries while the other three were arrested. Additionally, two firearms were confiscated. The case is being investigated for attempted murder and possession of a firearm,” stated Colonel Naidu.

She further mentioned that Public Order Policing, the National Intervention Unit, and Tactical Response teams are present in Umthatha to manage the situation. She said the situation is still tense and N2 and R61 roads are still blocked. Lt General Nomthetheleli Mene, the Provincial Commissioner, issued a stern warning against individuals circulating videos and messages that may incite violence. Mene emphasized that strict action will be taken against anyone involved in activities jeopardizing public safety, security, and the integrity of the election process.
