IPID INVESTIGATES AKHOSI’S DEATH
The Independent Police Investigative Department (IPID) is investigating circumstances that led to the shooting and fatally wounding allegedly by police of a passenger suspected of wrong doing in Matatiele on Friday night. Samora Akhosi 38 from Ramohlokoana in Matatiele was allegedly shot by police at East Street. According to reports he was shot twice in the body and he died on the spot. IPID Spokesperson Lizzy Suping confirmed that the Independent Police Investigative Department has taken over the case as it involves a police officer.
Suping said that it is alleged that police who were on patrol on that particular night chased a suspicious vehicle that skipped a red robot on the main street entering Matatiele. “The suspicious VW Golf Spot with a Gauteng registration number turned down East Street and stopped. As police approached the vehicle while it was stationery, Akhosi who was a passenger from the vehicle got out and advanced towards a police officer who was carrying an R5 rifle on her shoulders. He grabbed the rifle trying to take it to himself. There was a struggle between the police officer and Akhosi”, said Suping.
She said, while the two were fighting over this rifle Akhosi reached for his 9mm which was on his waist then the officer took her 9mm pistol from her holster and shot at the suspect fatally wounding him. “IPID will pronounce on the outcome once the investigation is complete”, concluded Suping.
