Teacher accused of raping grade 12 learner in Matatiele
A teacher from Ludidi Senior Secondary School in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, was arrested last week on allegations of raping 17-year-old Grade 12 learner. The incident reportedly occurred at the teacher’s home.
According to police, the sequence of events began when the learner was asked by a classmate, who was unwell, to accompany her to the clinic. Their class teacher, now the suspect in this case, offered them a lift. Upon arrival at the clinic, the classmate went in for treatment, leaving the suspect and the victim in the vehicle.
The suspect then asked the learner to accompany him to his homestead to help unload cases of beer from the back of the van. The learner, still in her school uniform, agreed. Once at his home, they unloaded the beer cases. After this, the suspect allegedly closed the door, trapping the two inside. He then reportedly began to kiss the learner against her will, ignoring her pleas to stop.
Despite the learner’s resistance and attempts to escape, the suspect allegedly forced himself on her, undressing her and raping her. Children playing outside the house knocked on the door, but the suspect did not open it. He then ordered the victim to wash herself, providing water in a basin.
Afterwards, the suspect and the victim returned to the clinic to fetch the learner’s classmate and then proceeded toward the school. During the ordeal, the suspect allegedly smelled of alcohol and offered the victim R50 in cash after the incident. However, he did not drive them all the way to school, instead dropping them off some distance away and instructing them to walk.
Shocked and distressed, the victim confided in her classmate about the rape. The two girls determined that the incident must be reported to authorities. The following day, the victim reported the incident to the police, who then escorted her to the hospital for a medical examination.
The suspect appeared before the Matatiele Magistrate Court on Monday, and the case has been remanded until June 10th for further proceedings
