Violence Strikes Matatiele: Two Separate Shootings Shock Residents

Residents of Matatiele were left reeling as two separate shooting incidents unfolded over the weekend, each claiming lives and leaving others critically injured.
The first incident occurred on Saturday night at Ramohlakoana location, where a government official, Phomolo Tau, was fatally shot. The shock of this tragedy had barely settled when another shooting took place on Sunday night at Itsokolele Location, near Matatiele CBD.
Karabo Bitsoane, 23, from Ramohlakoana, was visiting his girlfriend in Itsokolele when he was brutally attacked. An unidentified assailant entered the room and shot him nine times before fleeing the scene. Bitsoane tragically succumbed to his injuries on site. Police recovered nine empty cartridges from a 9mm pistol at the scene.
Meanwhile, on the same fateful night, another shooting occurred near North End Stadium in Itsokolele Location. Two men and a woman were rushed to the hospital after being shot at their home by unknown assailants. Police are investigating this incident as attempted murder.
In a separate but equally tragic incident on Sunday in eMaxesibeni, an off-duty professional nurse was fatally shot by her EMS Client Information Officer boyfriend. The officer then turned the gun on himself, resulting in critical injuries. The nurse, based at Rode Clinic, and the officer, stationed at the eMaxesibeni EMS base, were both off duty at the time.
Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa condemned the violence, expressing condolences to the nurse’s family and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured officer. She emphasized the seriousness of gender-based violence, particularly troubling during Women’s Month.
EMS personnel and police responded swiftly to both scenes, reflecting the urgent nature of these distressing events. MEC Capa has directed the district management team to support the nurse’s family during this difficult time.
