President Cyril Ramaphosa has voiced deep concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East, warning that the situation threatens regional and global peace.
In a statement on Saturday, the Presidency said the developments carry serious humanitarian, diplomatic and economic consequences. Ramaphosa urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and act in line with international law and the United Nations Charter.
He noted that Article 51 of the UN Charter permits self-defence only in cases of armed attack and stressed that anticipatory self-defence is not recognised under international law.
The President emphasised that military confrontation cannot resolve political conflicts and called for intensified diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and pursue peaceful negotiations.
