Minister of Agriculture and DA leader John Steenhuisen (49) is set to withdraw from the party’s leadership race before its April congress.
His tenure brought the DA its best election result ever at 21% in 2024, earning cabinet seats in the Government of National Unity, though internal pressures mounted from criticisms over the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, clashes with figures like Helen Zille, and past probes that cleared him of financial issues.
Steenhuisen has faced growing pressure internally to quit amid differences over policy choices within the nation’s coalition government
He will address the media Wednesday at 10 a.m., urging no speculation until then, with Geordin Hill-Lewis eyed as a potential unopposed successor as local elections approach.
