Devastating fire guts historic Botha Sigcau building in Mthatha

A devastating fire broke out shortly after 18:00 on Tuesday at the historic Botha Sigcau Building, a key government complex located at the corner of Owen and Leeds streets in the eastern region of the Eastern Cape.

According to a statement issued by the King Sabatha Dalindyebo Municipality, the blaze has caused significant disruption to several government departments housed within the building.

The 11-storey structure has long served as a central hub for public services in the area.

By 21:09, multiple departments had been affected by the fire, including the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Department of Transport, Department of Health, and Department of Social Development.

The municipality expressed “profound concern and sadness” over the incident, highlighting the interruption to essential service delivery and the damage to a critical government facility.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and to await further communication from the affected departments regarding contingency measures and recovery plans.

Emergency services were still on the scene at the time of reporting, and the cause of the fire has not yet been established.
