DMPR announces steep fuel price hikes for April 2026

Motorists in South Africa are set to face steep fuel price increases from April 2026, driven by a combination of global and local economic pressures.

According to the latest fuel price adjustments, petrol prices will rise by R3.06 per litre for both 93 and 95 grades. Diesel will see even sharper hikes, increasing by R7.37 per litre for 0.05% sulphur and R7.51 per litre for 0.005% sulphur. Illuminating paraffin will jump by R11.67 per litre, while LPGas prices will also increase.

The Department attributes the increases to rising international oil prices, higher shipping costs linked to tensions in the Middle East, and a weaker rand against the US dollar. The local currency depreciated during the review period, pushing up the cost of imported fuel.

Additional pressure comes from tax adjustments announced in the February budget. Fuel and Road Accident Fund levies have been increased, further contributing to the overall price hike, although the slate levy remains unchanged.

Government has, however, introduced a temporary relief measure, reducing the general fuel levy by R3.00 per litre to cushion consumers from the full impact of the increases.

The latest adjustments form part of broader efforts to balance global market realities with domestic economic priorities, but are expected to place further strain on households and businesses already grappling with rising living costs.
