Durban City FC etched their name into South African football history after clinching the 2026 Nedbank Cup title with a thrilling 2-1 victory over TS Galaxy at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
The final delivered high drama from the outset, with TS Galaxy taking an early lead through an unfortunate own goal by Durban City. But the KwaZulu-Natal side showed resilience, mounting a spirited comeback that will be remembered for years to come.
The equaliser arrived just before the hour mark when Mfanafuthi Mkhize ghosted in unmarked at the back post, calmly tapping in from a precise low cross by Luphumlo Sifumba.
With tensions rising and the clock ticking down, the match seemed destined for extra time until Jean Lwamba produced a moment of magic. With just over 10 minutes remaining, Lwamba picked up the ball in space and unleashed a sensational outside-of-the-boot strike that looped over goalkeeper Ira Tape and into the net.
It was a poetic turnaround for Lwamba, transforming from an early own-goal culprit into the match winner in spectacular fashion.
The victory marks Durban City FC’s first major trophy and a historic milestone, as they become the first team from KwaZulu-Natal to lift the Nedbank Cup.
