MTHATHA – A group of foreign nationals from Ethiopia, Somalia, and other East African countries have donated over R400,000 worth of aid to victims of the Eastern Cape flood disaster.
Led by Ethiopian community leader Welese Wamisho, the group delivered food parcels, mattresses, blankets, and children’s supplies to displaced families sheltering in centres across Mthatha, including a large delivery at Decolyign on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“This is not the last donation we will make,” said Wamisho. “These people are not just our customers; they are our neighbours and fellow human beings going through a tragedy of untold proportions.”
Haji Mahat Sultan, a Somali Muslim leader and long-time Mthatha resident, emphasized the emotional toll of the disaster:
“We want to help our brothers and sisters. I’ve been here for 13 years and have never seen anything like this.”
Senior Pastor Eferem Beyene of Mthatha’s Ebenezer International Church in Ethiopia echoed the call for unity and compassion.
“What matters is that we are one human race. We must show humanity to each other, especially in times of suffering.”
The East African community has pledged further support and continues to mobilize donations to help families in need.
