The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has allocated R55 million to procure vaccines to combat Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), following an outbreak that has disrupted livestock production and exports.
Speaking during the 2026/27 Policy Speech, Agriculture MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe said the disease has caused significant financial losses and highlighted weaknesses in biosecurity systems.
“The outbreak has resulted in significant financial losses, placing strain on farmers and the broader food system. FMD has highlighted the critical importance of strengthened biosecurity systems.” she said.
Government has also set aside additional funding for veterinary supplies, biosecurity infrastructure and farmer support programmes, including partnerships with the Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency and the Land Bank.
Plans are also underway to develop an export quarantine facility at the Dohne Agricultural Development Institute to help farmers access international markets.
Officials say the interventions aim to stabilise the sector, protect livelihoods and boost agricultural growth in the province.
