Eastern Cape education department warns of possible scholar transport disruptions

The Eastern Cape Department of Education has issued an urgent warning to school principals, parents and learners about a potential scholar transport protest that could disrupt school operations today.
Department Head of Education, Sharon Maasdorp cautioned that the anticipated protest may interfere with teaching and learning, urging schools to remain vigilant and prepared.

“We urge all school circuit managers to be alert so that they can assist schools should a need arise. We are certain that the provincial government is handling the impasse, as it is going to adversely affect teaching and learning in our schools,” Maasdorp said.

The department has called on school management teams and governing bodies to exercise discretion in managing the situation, particularly where learner safety may be at risk.
Maasdorp added that the department will work closely with other government departments to monitor developments around the protest, while also encouraging communities to play a role in safeguarding schools and learners.

“Safety first, as the precious lives of our colleagues and learners are our priority as the department,” she said.
Parents have also been urged to assess conditions before sending children to school.
“Furthermore, we call on all parents to assess the situation before releasing learners in the morning to prevent them from being affected,” Maasdorp explained.
