Eastern Cape’s mobile scooter contract declared invalid

The controversial procurement contract of the scooters by the Eastern Cape Health Department from the Fabkomp Company was on Tuesday declared invalid by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) Tribunal. The spokesperson of the unit, Kaizer Kganyago said the ruling was made on Friday.

Kganyago said the unit has resorted to neutralize payments on the contract” The contract between the Department and Fabkomp is no longer valid and the money that would have been paid out to the company is now safe in the coffers of the Department of Health.”

Last year, the former health MEC, Sindiswa Gomba made procurement of scooters worth R10 million as an attempt to curb the spread of Covid19, a decision which was met with criticism by taxpayers.

The launch of the scooters was attended by Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize in East London, who later said he was not consulted nor involved in the procurement of the scooters when this was brought before him.
