EASTERN CAPE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL IN HOSPITAL AFTER BEATEN BY LEARNERS

Learners refusing to cut their hairs and demanding to wear gold teeth at school.

An Eastern Cape School principal is in hospital with head injuries after he is allegedly beaten by angry learners on Wednesday. According to reports principal of Sedinana Senior Secondary School, Mr Sekhunyana in Mt Fletcher Eastern Cape was hit by a facebrick on the head during a protest action by leaners. It is said that Sekhunyana was rushed to Tayler Bequest Hospital , due to the seriousness of the injury he was then transferred to Mthatha hospital.

Reports said the incident began in the morning during morning classes attended mostly by grade 12 learners. They were demanding that they must be allowed to keep their hairs against the school policy which said all learners must cut their hairs.  It is alleged that it is the same grade 12 learners who locked the gates preventing other leaners and teachers from walking inside the school. The principal was already inside the school.  He tried to attend the issue of the locked gate, that is when the learners stoned him.

The incident was confirmed by the District Director Dr Bedeshani Mceleli . I received the reports in the morning on Wednesday and I quickly sent departmental officials to go and attend. I heard that the bone of contention is few learners refusing  to cut their hairs as per the school policy. It is suspected that they are the ones who stoned the principal. It is said that the learners even demanded to wear gold teeth. I am waiting to receive an official report to get all the details”, Dr Mceleli said.
