EFF declares victory against data expiry

The Economic Freedom Fighters declares victory in what they called the ‘unjust’ expiry data and airtime.

In a statement released by the party on Monday, the party said the EFF forced regulatory changes that protects consumers from monopolistic practices in the telecommunications sector.

“After sustained pressure in parliament, in the portfolio, Committees and Communications and on Trade and through direct with Telecommunications companies and ICASA, the EFF forced regulatory change that protects the consumers from losing data and airtime that they already paid for”

“We further escalated the struggle by engaging the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition, locating the issue within the broader framework of consumer protection, market abuse, and monopolistic practices in the telecommunications sector,” said the party.

ICASA introduced new rules that force rollovers, prioritise older bundles, and give users full control of their airtime. The new amendment requires mobile networks to roll over specific unused bundles.

“A Licensee must, at the end of the validity period of a bundle, rollover any unused bundle or portions thereof at least once, and subject the bundle rolled over to the same terms and conditions applicable to the original bundle, except for bundles that are 7 days or less, and excluding uncapped, free, and promotional bundles,” Icasa said.

The new amendments in the End-User and Subscriber Service Charter Amendment Regulations, 2025, will take effect on 23 January 2027, a year after their publication.
