The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has filed a charge of contempt of Parliament against forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan following his abrupt exit from an ad hoc committee probing alleged criminal infiltration within the police.
O’Sullivan walked out on Thursday, citing a flight, leaving proceedings in limbo and prompting the committee to seek guidance from Parliament’s legal advisers on how to proceed.
EFF deputy secretary-general Leigh-Ann Mathys criticised the investigator’s conduct, referencing earlier allegations that he threatened a witness during the inquiry. “We are dealing with what looks like a captured Parliament… this man is a fraudster. He has captured our justices,” she said.
National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza stated that any action against O’Sullivan will follow after reviewing the report submitted by committee chairperson Soviet Lekganyane.
The incident has reignited debates over Parliament’s ability to enforce accountability and maintain procedural discipline during high-profile investigations, with the EFF’s charges highlighting the legal avenues parties may pursue when oversight is disrupted.
