eThekwini responds to severe flooding after weekend storms

The eThekwini Municipality says disaster management teams are working around the clock following heavy rains over the weekend that caused widespread flooding and damage across Durban.

According to officials, teams were immediately deployed after the storm left submerged roads, fallen trees, and damaged vehicles in several areas. Disaster management crews, supported by recreation and parks teams, are clearing debris and restoring access to affected routes.

Durban Central and Southern regions were hardest hit, with 22 incidents reported, particularly in Chatsworth and Morningside. The Western region recorded 13 incidents, with Westville among the most affected, while the Northern region reported seven incidents, mainly in Newlands West.

Residents have been urged to exercise caution, avoid flooded roads, and report hazards such as fallen trees, damaged power lines, or blocked routes. “Motorists are strongly advised not to attempt crossing flooded roads, as water levels may be deeper and more dangerous than they appear,” the municipality said.

eThekwini stressed its commitment to prioritising the safety and wellbeing of residents as emergency crews continue responding to storm-related hazards.
