Five people have died and about 60 others were injured following a head-on collision between a bus and a VW Polo on the N6 road between KuGompo in East London and Stutterheim on Sunday night.
The crash occurred on 8 March 2026 when a bus carrying around 60 Zimbabwean nationals collided with a VW Polo travelling in the opposite direction. According to initial reports, the bus was travelling towards Stutterheim at the time of the accident.
The VW Polo, which had five occupants, became trapped underneath the bus following the impact. All five occupants of the vehicle lost their lives at the scene.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported the injured passengers from the bus to nearby medical facilities for further treatment and evaluation.
Authorities say the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. A case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving has been opened at South African Police Service’s Stutterheim police station.
Xolile Nqatha, the Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety, has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery.
Nqatha also urged motorists to obey the rules of the road and exercise caution to prevent further tragedies on the province’s roads.
