Four foreign nationals and one South African have been arrested in the early hours of this morning along the N2 near Ntabozuko after being found in possession of more than 200kg of suspected stolen copper.
According to authorities, the suspects were initially stopped for speeding after travelling at 151km/h in a 120km/h zone. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a large quantity of copper in the boot.
The recovered material has since been positively identified by both Eskom and Telkom as belonging to their infrastructure.
The suspects have been detained and are expected to appear in court soon. They face charges related to theft of essential infrastructure, as well as attempting to bribe law enforcement officers.
