Four bodies recovered after vehicle swept away at Makotopong river

Capricorn District, Limpopo – Tragedy struck in Sebayeng over the weekend when a vehicle was swept away at an overflowing bridge along the Makotopong River, leaving four people dead.

According to police reports, five occupants were travelling in a blue Renault Kwid along the gravel road connecting Madiga and Makotopong villages on Sunday morning, 08 March 2026. The vehicle allegedly overturned at the bridge and was carried into the river.

One occupant managed to escape and alerted authorities. The Provincial Search and Rescue team responded immediately, recovering the first body, identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele (27) of Madiga Village, on Sunday. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel confirmed his death at the scene.

Search operations continued on Monday, 09 March, with support from the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter. During these operations, the submerged vehicle was located, and three additional bodies were recovered. The deceased were identified as Seobi Dikgale (33), Betty Makokoane (22), and Shellote Dikgale (30), all from Madiga Village.

Police have opened an inquest docket, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
