Four children and young adult killed in shack fire in KZN

KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma has expressed his heartfelt condolences following the tragic deaths of four children and a 19-year-old in a devastating shack fire in Shakashead, Stanger.

The fire broke out at approximately 5:05am on Saturday, according to the KwaDukuza Local Municipality Disaster Management team.

The four children who lost their lives were aged between one, three and 14 years old. The fifth victim was a 19-year-old.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Duma conveyed his sympathies to the grieving family.

“We wish to express our deepest condolences to the surviving family members. I am currently liaising with the Mayor of KwaDukuza Local Municipality, Councillor Sduduzo Gumede, following this incident,” he said.

Duma added that a team from his office and the Department of Human Settlements has been assigned to work with the municipality to provide assistance to the affected family.

“One child and the mother of the children, Ntombovuyo Menemene, have been taken to hospital. The father, Sivuyile Noyila, sustained minor injuries. We salute the mother who saved the surviving child,” said the MEC.

Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the fire as the community comes to terms with the heartbreaking loss.
