The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested four officials linked to an alleged R4.9 million fraud scheme involving the unlawful processing and approval of social grants.
The arrests, made on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, followed a thorough investigation by SASSA’s Fraud and Compliance Unit in coordination with law enforcement authorities. Two current officials, one former official, and a fourth suspect were apprehended in Gauteng — one at a workshop in Heidelberg and the others in Soshanguve.
The suspects appeared in Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 25 February 2026.
SASSA’s Acting Regional Executive Manager in Gauteng, Godfrey Mohlamonyane, emphasised the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on fraud and corruption. “Any official who abuses their position to defraud the Agency not only undermines public trust but also deprives deserving beneficiaries of critical social assistance,” he said. “Such conduct will be met with the full might of the law, including criminal prosecution and internal disciplinary processes.”
The arrests signal a continued commitment by SASSA and law enforcement to root out corruption and protect the integrity of South Africa’s social assistance system.
