Four shot dead in police confrontation in Khayelitsha extortion crackdown

Four men were shot and killed during a confrontation with police in Site C, Khayelitsha on Wednesday evening, in what authorities say was an operation targeting extortion-related crime.

According to police Brigadier Novela Potelwa, members of the provincial combat team were acting on intelligence about suspects allegedly involved in the extortion of local businesses in the area. Officers identified a vehicle whose occupants matched the description of the suspects and began following it along Japhta K Masemola Road.

Police say they attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the situation escalated when the occupants allegedly drew firearms and pointed them at officers.

“The team responded, and as a consequence, four yet-to-be-identified males were fatally wounded,” said Potelwa.

Three firearms believed to belong to the deceased were recovered at the scene.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), which probes cases involving police action, has launched an investigation into the shooting.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed, and investigations are ongoing.
