The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has raised alarm after the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) revealed that at least 97 South African Police Service members are accused of sexual violence or rape nationally.
The committee described the allegations as a serious betrayal of public trust, saying officers implicated in such crimes must face swift and visible consequences.
During oversight visits, the committee also found that none of the police stations inspected were fully compliant with the Domestic Violence Act, citing administrative and operational shortcomings.
It has called for improved accountability, more social workers and better funding for NPOs supporting victims, while acknowledging that many officers continue to serve with integrity.
