Gauteng Premier launches R760 million Johannesburg water upgrade

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced a R760 million phased infrastructure project to permanently fix Johannesburg’s water supply.

A new Brixton reservoir and tower will go live this Saturday, with an emergency pumping station following next week. A 5km pipeline, due by year-end, will provide a long-term solution.

The upgrades come after a January 27 crisis caused by an explosion, fire, and burst pipe at the Rand Water plant, which disrupted supply across Johannesburg. Midrand’s water is fully restored, while Soweto, Kagiso, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Sedibeng, and parts of the West Rand have mostly stable supply. Some areas, including Westdene, Sophiatown, and Doornkop, still face pressure fluctuations.

New storage facilities are being built, including a 20-million-litre reservoir in Midrand, supported by private contributions, with similar projects across other municipalities. Lesufi apologised for ongoing disruptions and assured residents of a permanent solution.
